WHAT IS AMN?

AMN is a paradigm in which orthopaedic manual muscle testing (OMMT) is used to test whether muscles are weak and inhibited? or whether they are 'firing' appropriately. When muscles are weak and inhibited,  global manual muscle testing (GMMT) is then used to ascertain why.

Our bodies operate as bioelectrical systems, with every function mediated by electrical signals and their associated fields. Fascia provides the ubiquitous medium for this electrical signaling. When injured, diseased or dysfunctional, electrical signals are disrupted, leading to imbalances that may manifest as pain or mobility issues. By understanding and correcting these bioelectrical imbalances, we unlock new pathways to healing and improve our movement and function.

WHO IS AMN FOR?

AMN is for everyone.  I use it in my practice as a bike fitter, but in truth, it serves everyone.  We all face the same challenges in our daily life,  be it from stress and trauma, or the gut and immune systems constant battle with the environment we are now living in.  Virtually no one is living even close to protecting their circadian biology and yet all of these systems and more are connected.  When we have heightened bioelectrical charge in them, there is a direct and negative impact on our physiological output as a result .

AMN is for cyclists yes, but it is relevant for any athlete that is striving for optimum.  It can help to improve balance and co ordination,  it can help restore function and range of motion and it can also be used for those who are simply struggling with common pain complaints.

Often when mainstream avenues have been exhausted, AMN can be the solution for persistent pain complaints that seemingly have no origin.

DO I NEED TO ADD AMN ON AS PART OF MY BIKEFIT?

No you do not. Most people have pre conceived ideas about what a bikefit is and AMN is not part of that, however that is not to say you should settle for the 'norm'.   If you think you have functional issues that are affecting your fit, or if you have issues you have been trying to resolve in physiotherapy or with a chiropractor for example, prior to your bikefit,  then I would strongly recommend you add this service on when you book.

If you don't have any of these issues, you will almost certainly still be a human that has weak and inhibited muscles somewhere within the musculoskeletal system. The glutes and psoas for example are regularly 'off' and so, there is always a case to be made for resolving such issues during a bikefit anyway.

When the brain doesn't have a full arsenal of muscles to work with,  such as when we have deafferented -weak and inhibited muscles, it will develop compensatory patterns to work around the deficit. When we re afferent the brain using AMN, we are effectively giving the brain those muscles back to work with again, and so it goes through the process of  "re-formatting the hard drive", or in other words, it will develop new, more efficient motor patterns based on the tools is now has to do the job.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I BOOK AN AMN SESSION?

I would say that it depends on how much value you place on how well you work. For people who are trying to resolve ongoing issues and pain complaints, then once a week is a good amount. For people who would like to be preventative, rather than reactive, and who are already functioning quite well, you could say once per month or even once a quarter if you find value in it.

For people who are attending with pain complaints only, I recommend a maximum of three sessions, whereby if the person feels there has been no improvement to their original condition I would suggest that AMN is not the required modality to resolve their issues. My intention is not to set up regular sessions that are not making the necessary impact.  Obviously if there is an impact, then once per week is sufficient.

If you don't book in initially  for an AMN session with your bikefit, you can book at a later date for AMN as a standalone service, that is not a problem.
